Swollen gums is a sign of unhealthy dental condition

September 24th, 2008

A severe condition of gum
infection is commonly called periodontal disease. This disease is mostly
experienced by many individuals. It is associated with pain and discomfort and
eventually if left untreated can lead to tooth loss. Gums got swollen in an
early stage of periodontal
disease
. It becomes inflamed, tender, and appears to be red. Some other
factors that trigger gum infection are the accumulation of plaque in the
surface of the teeth covering the gum line. The plaque carries harmful bacteria
and this is the cause why gums are irritated and swollen. What is dangerous is
the persistent swelling, pain and discomfort leading to tooth loss is the risk
to heart attack and stroke. Bleeding gums is the way dental bacteria have the
chance to spread to the heart leading cardiovascular disease. Healthy gums can
be achieved by observing proper oral care and a periodic dental check ups and
cleanings.
